भूतभावोद्भवकरो विसर्गः कर्मसंज्ञितः

श्रीभगवान् बोले -- परम अक्षर ब्रह्म है और जीवका अपना जो होनापन है उसको अध्यात्म कहते हैं। प्राणियोंका उद्भव करनेवाला जो त्याग है उसकी कर्म संज्ञा है।

The Blessed Lord said  Brahman is the Imperishable, the Supreme; Its essential nature is called Self-knowledge; the offering (to the gods) which causes existence and manifestation of beings and which also sustains them is called action.

Transliteration

śrībhagavān uvāca
akṣaraṃ brahma paramaṃ svabhāvo'dhyātmam ucyate
bhūtabhāvodbhavakaro visargaḥ karmasaṃjñitaḥ

अनुवाद

श्री भगवान ने कहा — परम अविनाशी तत्त्व ब्रह्म है, अपना स्वरूप अध्यात्म कहलाता है तथा भूतों के भाव को उत्पन्न करने वाला जो त्याग है, वह कर्म नाम से कहा गया है।

भावार्थ

इस श्लोक में भगवान कृष्ण अर्जुन के प्रश्नों का उत्तर देते हुए ब्रह्म, अध्यात्म और कर्म को परिभाषित करते हैं। परम अविनाशी और नित्य तत्त्व को ब्रह्म कहा गया है। प्रत्येक जीव का अपना व्यक्तिगत स्वरूप या स्वभाव अध्यात्म कहलाता है। सृष्टि में चराचर प्राणियों की उत्पत्ति और विकास का कारण बनने वाली विसर्ग (त्याग या सृष्टि की क्रिया) को कर्म कहा जाता है।

Translation

The Blessed Lord said: The Supreme Indestructible is Brahman; one’s own self is called Adhyatma. The creative force that causes the manifestation of beings is called Karma.

Meaning

In this verse, Lord Krishna answers Arjuna’s questions by defining Brahman, Adhyatma, and Karma. Brahman is the supreme, imperishable reality that is eternal and changeless. Adhyatma refers to the individual self or the inherent nature of the living entity. Karma is defined as the creative force or sacrificial action that brings about the manifestation and development of living beings.
