Bhagavad Gita 17.5

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः
दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः

जो मनुष्य शास्त्रविधिसे रहित घोर तप करते हैं जो दम्भ और अहङ्कारसे अच्छी तरह युक्त हैं जो भोगपदार्थ? आसक्ति और हठसे युक्त हैं जो शरीरमें स्थित पाँच भूतोंको अर्थात् पाञ्चभौतिक शरीरको तथा अन्तःकरणमें स्थित मुझ परमात्माको भी कृश करनेवाले हैं उन अज्ञानियोंको तू आसुर निश्चयवाले (आसुरी सम्पदावाले) समझ।

Those men who practise terrific austerities not enjoined by the scriptures, given to hypocrisy and egoism, impelled by the force of lust and attachment.

Transliteration

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ
dambhāhaṅkārasaṃyuktāḥ kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ

अनुवाद

जो मनुष्य शास्त्र की विधि से रहित, घोर तप को तपते हैं तथा दम्भ और अहंकार से युक्त एवं कामना, आसक्ति और बल के अभिमान से चूर हैं

भावार्थ

इस श्लोक में भगवान कृष्ण आसुरी स्वभाव वाले मनुष्यों के तप का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। वे लोग जो शास्त्रों के नियमों की उपेक्षा करके केवल दिखावे और अहंकार के लिए घोर तपस्या करते हैं, वे वास्तव में तामसी और आसुरी प्रवृत्ति के होते हैं। उनका तप दूसरों को कष्ट देने वाला और स्वयं के शरीर को सुखाने वाला होता है।

Translation

Those people who perform severe austerities not enjoined by the scriptures, given up to hypocrisy and egotism, impelled by the force of desire and attachment

Meaning

In this verse, Lord Krishna describes the austerities performed by those of demonic nature. People who perform severe penances not authorized by the scriptures, driven by vanity, ego, lust, and attachment, do so for self-glorification. Such misguided austerities do not lead to spiritual progress but rather cause harm.
