जो दान बिना सत्कारके तथा अवज्ञापूर्वक अयोग्य देश और कालमें कुपात्रको दिया जाता है? वह दान तामस कहा गया है।

संक्षेपत? सात्त्विक दान के जो सर्वथा विपरीत है वह दान तामस कहा जाता है। कुपात्र का अर्थ है मूर्ख? चोर? मद्यपानादि करने वाले लोग।यज्ञ? दान? तप आदि को सुसंस्कृत और सम्पूर्ण करने के लिए भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण उपदेश देते हुए कहते हैं

English Translation By Swami Sivananda

The gift that is given at a wrong place and time, to unworthy persons, without respect or with insult is declared to be Tamasic.

Transliteration

adeśakāle yaddānamapātrebhyaśca dīyate
asatkṛtamavajñātaṃ tattāmasamudāhṛtam

अनुवाद

और जो दान अयोग्य स्थान तथा अनुपयुक्त समय में, और अयोग्य पात्रों को, बिना सत्कार के तथा तिरस्कारपूर्वक दिया जाता है, वह तामस कहा गया है

भावार्थ

इस श्लोक में भगवान कृष्ण तामसिक दान के लक्षणों का वर्णन करते हैं। ऐसा दान जो बिना सोचे-समझे, गलत समय और स्थान पर, अपात्र व्यक्तियों को दिया जाता है, वह तामसिक कहलाता है। इसके अतिरिक्त, यदि दान देते समय आदर का भाव न हो और प्राप्तकर्ता का अपमान किया जाए, तो वह दान अपनी सात्त्विकता खोकर तामस श्रेणी में आ जाता है।

Translation

And that charity which is given at an improper place and time, and to unworthy persons, without respect and with contempt, is declared to be of the nature of ignorance

Meaning

In this verse, Lord Krishna describes the characteristics of charity in the mode of ignorance (tamas). Charity that is given at an inappropriate place and time, to unworthy recipients, is considered tamasik. Furthermore, even if given, if it is performed without proper respect and with a contemptuous attitude, it loses all spiritual merit and is classified as dark or ignorant.
