Bhagavad Gita 12.18

समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः

जो शत्रु और मित्रमें तथा मानअपमानमें सम है और शीतउष्ण (अनुकूलताप्रतिकूलता) तथा सुखदुःखमें सम है एवं आसक्तिसे रहित है? और जो निन्दास्तुतिको समान समझनेवाला? मननशील? जिसकिसी प्रकारसे भी (शरीरका निर्वाह होनेमें) संतुष्ट? रहनेके स्थान तथा शरीरमें ममताआसक्तिसे रहित और स्थिर बुद्धिवाला है? वह भक्तिमान् मनुष्य मुझे प्रिय है।

He who is the same to foe and friend, and also in honour and dishonour, who is the same in cold and heat and in pleasure and pain, who is free from attachment.

Transliteration

samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāpamānayoḥ
śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ

अनुवाद

जो शत्रु और मित्र में तथा मान और अपमान में समान है, और जो सर्दी-गर्मी तथा सुख-दुःख में समान है और आसक्ति से रहित है।

भावार्थ

इस श्लोक में भगवान कृष्ण उस भक्त के गुणों का वर्णन कर रहे हैं जो उन्हें अत्यंत प्रिय है। ऐसा व्यक्ति अनुकूल और प्रतिकूल दोनों परिस्थितियों में अपना मानसिक संतुलन बनाए रखता है। वह किसी के प्रति द्वेष या विशेष आसक्ति नहीं रखता और भौतिक द्वंद्वों से अप्रभावित रहता है।

Translation

He who is equal to foe and friend, and also in honor and dishonor, who is the same in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, and who is free from attachment.

Meaning

In this verse, Lord Krishna describes the qualities of a devotee who is very dear to Him. Such a person maintains mental equanimity in both favorable and unfavorable circumstances. He does not harbor hatred or special attachment toward anyone and remains unaffected by material dualities.
