यह विचार कर कि संभवत उसने अपने पक्ष को श्रीकृष्ण के समक्ष अच्छी प्रकार दृढ़ता से प्रस्तुत नहीं किया है जिससे कि भगवान् उसके मत की पुष्टि करें अर्जुन व्यर्थ में त्याग की बातें करता है। वह यह दर्शाना चाहता है कि वह इतना उदार हृदय है कि उसके चचेरे भाई उसको मार भी डालें तो भी वह उन्हें मारने को तैयार नहीं होगा। अतिशयोक्ति की चरम सीमा पर वह तब पहुँचता है जब वह घोषणा करता है कि त्रैलोक्य का राज्य मिलता हो तब भी वह युद्ध नहीं करेगा फिर केवल हस्तिनापुर के राज्य की बात ही क्या है।

English Translation By Swami Sivananda

These I do not wish to kill, though they kill me, O Krishna,
even for the sake of dominion over the three worlds; leave alone killing
them for the sake of the earth.

Transliteration

etānna hantumicchāmi ghnato'pi madhusūdana
api trailokyarājyasya hetoḥ kiṃ nu mahīkṛte

अनुवाद

हे मधुसूदन! मुझे मारने पर भी, अथवा तीनों लोकों के राज्य के लिए भी, मैं इन्हें मारना नहीं चाहता, फिर पृथ्वी के लिए तो कहना ही क्या।

भावार्थ

अर्जुन अपनी गहरी निराशा और स्वजनों से युद्ध न करने की इच्छा व्यक्त करते हैं। वे श्रीकृष्ण से कहते हैं कि यदि उन्हें तीनों लोकों का राज्य भी मिल जाए, तो भी वे अपने सगे-संबंधियों का वध नहीं करना चाहते। केवल इस पृथ्वी के राज्य के लिए तो ऐसा घोर पाप करने का प्रश्न ही नहीं उठता।

Translation

O Madhusudana, even if they kill me, I do not wish to kill them, even for the sake of the kingdom of the three worlds, let alone for the earth.

Meaning

Arjuna expresses his deep despair and unwillingness to fight his own relatives. He tells Krishna that the reward of ruling the entire earth, or even the three worlds, is meaningless if it requires killing his loved ones. He would rather be killed by them unresisting than commit such a sin for worldly gains.
