एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो गुडाकेशेन भारत
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये स्थापयित्वा रथोत्तमम्

सञ्जय बोले  हे भरतवंशी राजन् निद्राविजयी अर्जुनके द्वारा इस तरह कहनेपर अन्तर्यामी भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने दोनों सेनाओंके मध्यभागमें पितामह भीष्म और आचार्य द्रोणके सामने तथा सम्पूर्ण राजाओंके सामने श्रेष्ठ रथको खड़ा करके इस तरह कहा कि हे पार्थ इन इकट्ठे हुए कुरुवंशियोंको देख।

Sanjaya said  Thus addressed by Arjuna, Krishna, having stationed that
best of chariots, O Dhritarashtra, in the midst of the two armies.

Transliteration

sañjaya uvāca
evamukto hṛṣīkeśo guḍākeśena bhārata
senayorubhayormadhye sthāpayitvā rathottamam

अनुवाद

संजय ने कहा — हे भरतवंशी! अर्जुन द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, श्रीकृष्ण ने दोनों सेनाओं के बीच में उस उत्तम रथ को खड़ा कर दिया।

भावार्थ

संजय राजा धृतराष्ट्र को ‘भारत’ कहकर सम्बोधित करते हैं और युद्धभूमि का आँखों देखा हाल बताते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि जब निद्रा को जीतने वाले अर्जुन (गुडाकेश) ने श्रीकृष्ण (हृषीकेश) से रथ को दोनों सेनाओं के बीच ले चलने का अनुरोध किया, तो भगवान ने उस उत्तम रथ को वहां खड़ा कर दिया। यह श्लोक अर्जुन द्वारा विपक्षी योद्धाओं के निरीक्षण की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है।

Translation

Sanjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, thus addressed by Arjuna, Krishna stationed the excellent chariot in the midst of both armies.

Meaning

Sanjaya addresses King Dhritarashtra as ‘Bharata’ and narrates the events unfolding on the battlefield. He explains that after Arjuna (Gudakesha, the conqueror of sleep) requested Krishna to place the chariot between the two armies, Krishna (Hrishikesha, the master of the senses) obliged. This action sets the stage for Arjuna to closely observe the opposing forces before the war begins.
